who can supervise me as a learner driver

If you are learning to drive then it is important that you are following the law when out on the roads. You always need someone else in the car as a supervisor when you are a learner.

But who can sit in the car with you?

The simple answer to this question is someone who has had a license for the type of vehicle you are driving for at least 3 years. They must also be at least 21 years of age.

You can be fined up to £1000 and be given 6 points on your provisional license if you fail to have a suitable supervisor in the car.

Why do I need someone with at least 3 years experience?

The answer to this is quite obvious but it is important that as a learner you have somebody who is comfortable supervising you.

A driver who has just received their license is still learning. They may give bad advice or be unable to help.

Can I have others with me in the car?

As long as you have a supervisor with you in the front seat then it is legal to have others in the car as well.

Make sure if you are in the car with others that they are not distracting you and that you can hear your supervisors instructions.

If everyone in the car is very loud then you are more likely to make an error. You will also be unable to hear your supervisor.

Who can be my driving supervisor?

Most people will go on a drive with their parents or relatives for practice.

Make sure it is someone who you feel comfortable with. It is also a good idea to have someone who is calm and unlikely to get wound up.

If your supervisor gets wound up then it can carry on to you as the driver. This is not good for your focus on the road.

Make sure you have insurance

It is also very important that you have insurance on the car that you are practising in. It is illegal not to.

You must also have the correct type of insurance as learner insurance is different to typical car insurance. Find out more here.

You can get an unlimited fine, be banned from driving and get up to 8 penalty points for driving without insurance. Don’t risk it.

Stay calm

When having a supervisor in the car with you, things can get a little heated. It is very common especially with close family members.

Try to stay calm and avoid shouting. If the tensions raise then it is probably a good idea to head home and go again another day.
