Driving lessons have different prices in different places so how much does it cost for driving lessons in Scotland?
The price will depend on who you choose to learn with and what type of lessons you are booking (manual/automatic).
Having looked at instructors rates throughout Scotland, the average is £30 per hour.
This is a common cost throughout the U.K.
Why do lessons cost so much?
Driving lessons can seem quite expensive, here are the reasons why.
It can be very expensive for instructors to insure their car for learning purposes. This can reflect in the cost of lessons.
There is also a high cost in petrol. Obviously driving around most of the day will add up petrol costs.
Driving is a very important skill and instructors need to be well trained to teach you to drive safely and correctly.
Driving instructors aren’t always fully booked. This means there will be some weeks where they aren’t able to work 8 hours a day.
It is for all these reasons that driving lessons are so expensive.
Now how can we reduce the cost of lessons?
How can I reduce the cost of lessons?
One way to help reduce the cost of lessons is to buy blocks of lessons. Most instructors allow the option to buy a 10 hour block of lessons. This comes at a cheaper price than buying each hour individually.
The reason they can give you a better price for this is because it gives them the security of having you in their books for 10 hours guaranteed.
We would recommend that you have at least 4 hours with your driving instructor before you make a block booking.
You wont know you get on 100% with your driving instructor until you have had a few hours with them. You don’t want to have locked in another 10 hours with your instructor only to find out they are not the right match for you.
There is another way to decrease your costs a lot when it comes to learning to drive. This involves having a family member or friend who will take you out on the roads.
I you have a car that you are insured on then you can have a family member or friend who is over 21 and has a license themselves supervise your driving.
Obviously not everyone has a car they are insured on before they pass their test but there is a very good way around this. It is possible to rent a car for learners through Arnold Clark from only £12 an hour. You can also get 2 hours for the price of 1 if you have a Young Scot card.
This is less than half the price of having an instructor.
Learning with a family member can also be a little more relaxing as you are in charge of what you would like to practice. It can be a very good way of practising your manoeuvres.
How much will it cost in total to learn to drive?
This question obviously depends on how many lessons you take before you pass and if you use some of our tips to save money.
According to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), most people take 45 hours of lessons to learn how to drive, plus 22 hours of practising.
Let’s assume the worst in the fact that we don’t get any discount on lessons, 45 x 30 = £1350.
We will be using Arnold Clark’s rent a car with 2 hours for the price of one with our Young Scott card, 25 x 6 = £150.
- Driving Lessons – £1350
- Rental Car – £150
- Provisional License – £34
- Theory Test – £23
- Practical Test – £62
Total – £1619
Now this is based on the fact that you only take 50 hours of driving to pass and also that you pass both your practical and theory tests first time.
This is not the case for everyone so it is best to assume the worst. Overall, we would estimate that learning to drive in Scotland would cost anywhere from £1,400 to £1,800.
This is a lot of money for most people which can put some off the idea of learning to drive.
