Applying for your provisional drivers license is the first step to getting on the road and becoming a fully licensed driver.
There are some important things to consider when applying for your provisional driving license which I will go over in this article.
I have also created a YouTube video which shows how to fill out the application form online which you can watch by clicking here.
Am I eligible to apply for a provisional license?
The first thing you must consider before you apply for your license is whether you are eligible to apply for it.
Different licenses have different requirements you must pass to be granted them.
So how do you know if you are eligible? If you go to this web page it allows you to answer a few questions which will then answer whether you are eligible for the type of provisional license you are applying for.
Once you have checked that you can apply for the license you should go to https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence to begin filling out the application.

How much does it cost for my provisional license?
A provisional license will cost you £34 if you apply online and £43 if you apply through post.
There is no way around this cost. It may seem like a lot of money just for a provisional license but it is a necessary cost to begin driving.
This cost will also cover you for your full driving license, so when you pass there is no cost to upgrade your license.
The only cost comes if you would like to change the photo from your provisional license. To change the picture costs £17. You can have a better look at the fees here.
How long will it take for my provisional license to arrive?
After filling out the form online, you should receive your provisional driving license within 2 weeks. Some people will receive it earlier than this.
If you are applying through post then you will receive it within 2 weeks of the letter being delivered.
Should I apply if I might not get lessons right now?
The short answer is yes! Applying for you license doesn’t take long and it will last you a very long time. It is good to have so you can start driving as soon as you are ready.
If you wait until you are ready to start driving before you apply then you will need to wait until your license arrives. That could take up to 2 weeks.
We would recommend that everyone applies for a car provisional as soon as they are eligible.
The only case we would not not applying is if you are confident that you will never want to drive. Even then a license could be useful as another form of identification.
What next after applying for my provisional drivers license?
Once you have applied you can get ready for your first lesson.
You may not want to book it yet in case there is a problem with your application. However, you could look around for a driving instructor.
Once you have received your provisional in the mail you can get started with your lessons. This guide will give you some great tips for booking your first lesson and finding an instructor that suits your needs.
